A Dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is surgically fixed to the jawbone. Over time the implant fuses to the bone and provides a stable anchor to attach a non-removable false tooth, or even a set of false teeth. False teeth are color-matched to your natural teeth, and to all appearances look, feel and act just like your own.
Dental implants are durable and light, and if you look after them correctly can last a lifetime. Just like your own teeth, implant-supported teeth can still be damaged by poor oral hygiene, gum disease and damage caused by trauma, so you will have to take care of them. They don’t require any additional special care than your own teeth, just brushing, flossing and your regular dental check-up.
By far, the biggest advantage of dental implants is that they are the ideal replacement for a missing tooth. They are usually permanent, are strong, durable, stable and mimic your own tooth perfectly, but don’t suffer from decay or sensitivity to hot and cold like your own teeth.
They eliminate the need for removable dentures, dispensing with removing, soaking and cleaning and requiring no messy adhesives. Dental implants make it easier to chew, talk and smile in comparison with dentures, who some people find difficult to adapt to. Ill-fitting dentures are uncomfortable, whereas a dental implant feels exactly like your own tooth.
Removable dentures can be supported by dental implants and provide a secure base and preventing your dentures from moving, improving comfort and confidence – there is nothing worse than wondering whether your dentures are going to slip if you chew or smile.
From a health perspective they help prevent gum recession and bone loss – and they can help prevent wrinkles. If you don’t replace a missing tooth the soft tissue of your lips can sink into the gap and cause a permanent wrinkle!
Functional, beautiful and with health benefits, dental implants provide a long-term solution for missing teeth. Unfortunately, the cost prevents a lot of people having the procedure – but now you can get low-cost dental implants in Hungary and bring back your beautiful, natural smile.
Your dentist will need to asses the health of your teeth and gums before any implant is placed. Signs of gum disease or tooth decay will be treated first, and x-rays and possibly CT scans will be used to assess your bone.
In some patients bone loss has occurred which prevents the implant procedure from being effective. In these circumstances an additional bone graft procedure (sometimes called a sinus lift) will be required - which isn’t as horrific as it sounds and is quite straightforward, and a relatively common procedure. As with all surgical procedures it will take time to heal – a minimum of 6 months, but some dentists prefer to leave it for up to a year.
To place the implant a cut is made in the gum where it is to be inserted, and a small hole drilled into the jawbone. The implant is placed into the socket and the gum stitched over it. There is no visible sign of the implant in your mouth and you will be given a light, healing denture to wear over the next few months until the implant has integrated with the bone.
After the healing period the gum is lifted again and a post attached to the implant with the false tooth (crown).
The level of discomfort after the placement of the implant is generally equivalent to that experienced from a tooth extraction. Generally, most implants are placed under a local anesthetic, but sedation can be used if you are apprehensive, and it may be preferred if you are having a bone graft procedure.
The process for dental implants in Hungary typically involves 2 (or 3 trips if a bone graft is necessary) to the dentist over 4 to 12 months. The first visit requires around 5 days and the second around 7. Most patients are able to resume normal activities the day after the placement of implants.
