For patients looking to replace missing teeth, having dental implants are becoming a reality by traveling to The Philippines to get the procedure done. With unaffordable prices at home, certainly for Aussies and Kiwis, a trip to The Philippines offers them quality dentistry at a price they can afford, and the chance to enjoy a holiday or two in a remarkable part of the world.
Activities in or around The Philippines’ waters will suit surfers, wakeboarders, kayakers and pretty-much any other water-sport enthusiasts. Snorkeling and diving is also a popular pastime here. For land-lubbers there are miles of white sandy beaches, mountains, volcanoes and jungles to trek and explore – and there are, of course, all the tourist accoutrements such as shopping, restaurants, bars and clubs to enjoy at the end of the day
Dental implant procedures usually need to be done in two stages, so this must be borne in mind when you are working out the cost of traveling abroad for your treatment. You will have to set aside two separate visits – usually between 3 and 12 months apart – to have both stages of your dental implants completed. Generally, most people can save more than AUD $2,000 on traveling to The Philippines for just one dental implant and so two trips will usually still cost less than the procedure alone at home.
In many ways The Philippines has much in common with Western nations. In part, this is because practically everybody speaks English – and this is because until the country’s independence in the 1940s it was still occupied by the Americans. It has shared democratic values with America and Europe, and historical and cultural ties are evidenced throughout the country.
Thousands of qualified Filipino dentists, doctors and nursing practitioners choose to work abroad in Western countries, particularly the United States, which is a testament to its medical training. Globalization means cross-border training is now common-place and we work with many Filipino dentists who are members of the American Dental Association and are affiliated with international organizations including the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.
A dental implant procedure in The Philipppines consists of three parts. The first is the implant itself, which is inserted into the jawbone. The second is called the abutment, which is a post that attaches the crown (false tooth) to the implant – and the third is the crown.
On your first trip the implant is inserted. It is inserted in one day, but you will need to be around for a few days afterwards to have it checked to ensure everything is as it should be before you return home.
After the implant is inserted you will need to wait for between 3 and 12 months for osseointegration to take place. This is when the implant fuses with the jawbone and provides a firm and stable base for the crow to attach to.
When you return for your second visit the abutment and crown are placed during this trip. You will need to factor in 7-10 days for this trip as your dentist will want to check that your implant is stable and that you have no signs of infection.
Some patients may need an additional trip if they cannot have the implant inserted on the first trip if they require sinus lift surgery, or have had recent extractions.
A titanium dental implant with abutment and standard crown in Australia is on average around AUD $3,800. In The Philippines it is as little as AUD $1,700.
Dental implants are the closest thing to natural teeth and The Philippines affords a practical choice for patients to have the procedure done during their annual holidays.
