Looking for dentists in Costa Rica? The best dentist isn’t always easy to spot and the choice can be quite overwhelming. Here’s some tips on how to choose your dentist if you’re heading to Costa Rica for your dental work.

If you’re traveling to another country for your dental work then it’s not likely you can ask your friends, family or neighbors for their recommendations – although as dental tourism is becoming more commonplace you never know if someone you know has been to a dentist abroad. However, let’s take it that no-one you know has any recommendations, just what should you be looking for?

Obviously, the internet is probably where you’ll start – and there is plenty of good information out there, but you just need to know what you are looking for. What you should be doing is building up a picture as not one specific area is going to tell you that a dentist is a good one. Here’s some of the things you can check:

1: Dentist qualifications

This is probably the most obvious place to start. Dentists in Costa Rica have the minimum Doctor of Dental Surgery qualification, which at least demonstrates they have qualified as a general dentist, just as their counterparts in the United States, Canada and the rest of the world do.

For dentists offering specialist dentistry, such as dental implants or endodontics, then you may want to look to see if they have additional specialty qualifications or training. You may also want to see if they are members of relevant professional organizations, like the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) if you’re having dental implants in Costa Rica , or the International Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons. Just remember, these international associations are not mandatory and so it doesn’t mean if your chosen dentist is not a member that they aren’t reliable.

2: Find out about your procedure/dental problem

Knowledge is power and so knowing at least a little about your problem means that you can at least ask the dentist relevant questions, which may help you come to a decision about your choice of dentist. It will also help you if you know that, for instance, you are interested in finding a dentist that practices holistic dentistry, like Prisma Dental.

3: What is the clinic like?

You will probably be able to see photos online. Does it look modern and clean? What technologies do they have? Some of the newest technologies, like 3D/CT scanning enable dentists to get a 3D picture of your jaws and skull – enabling them to see problems that ordinary x-rays don’t show. Technologies also exist that place implants with pinpoint accuracy using a computer.

Some clinics offer CAD/CAM technology. This allows the dentist to design and manufacture on-site prosthodontics (veneers, crowns etc.) If you are in a hurry, this might be something that’s important to you.

Choosing the best dentist in Costa Rica for your circumstances might not necessarily be the same as someone else’s. If you’d like some help, then speak to the experts, like Dental Departures’ Customer Care Team, who will be able to point you in the right direction.
