Need a root canal but shocked by the price at home? What if we told you that you can save 75% (and quite possibly your tooth) by going for your root canal in Colombia ? Dental tourism is the way to go if you want to enjoy a vacation and save a fortune on your dental care. With Dental Departures you can choose from a range of quality-checked, reliable clinics throughout Colombia and dozens of other countries.
If you’re lucky, you may have no symptoms whatsoever. However, the majority of us are usually alerted to a problem when we experience swelling in the gum line near the infected tooth. This swelling may be painful and contain pus, potentially resulting in an unpleasant taste in your mouth.
A dentist can confirm whether you have an infection of the soft tissue in the center of your tooth, which will require a root canal procedure to fix. It is at this point that you find out how expensive the treatment is, particularly if the tooth needs a crown to strengthen it after the root canal procedure has been carried out. And the eventual result for those that choose not to get a root canal? One less tooth, as it will need to be extracted to prevent recurring painful infections.
Although root canals can often be completed in one visit, the procedure an take up to two weeks to complete , depending on whether there is an infection, and whether you need an extraction. Thus, it’s important to know the extent of the treatment you need before you go; you don’t want to book a return flight home only to find out you need to stay in the country for longer. Apart from this issue, which your local dentist can consult you on for a comparatively small fee, there is no reason why you shouldn’t consider getting your root canal in Colombia. The treatment is no worse than a filling, although it does take a good deal longer to carry out.
One thing to bear in mind is that if your tooth is infected, the treatment cannot be carried out until the infection has been cleared up. If you are planning on traveling to Colombia for your treatment, obtaining antibiotics from a dentist at home to treat any infection beforehand is advisable. This way, once you arrive in Colombia, the dentist there can start the procedure immediately.
The dentist will examine your mouth thoroughly, taking x-rays to see if there is any infection and to identify how many roots your tooth has. Each root has between one and three root canals, which will need to be cleaned and debrided (remove dead tissue). Obviously, the more root canals, the longer the procedure will take. You may be asked to return on another day to carry out the procedure if the dentist thinks it will take a long time. The procedure is relatively straightforward and your mouth will be numbed with local anesthetic, so you won’t feel a thing.
The procedure involves the dentist making a hole in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. The process of clearing out the infected material begins and once removed the resulting cavities are thoroughly cleaned. Antibiotic medication may be placed in the pulp chamber once finished and a temporary filling is used to seal the tooth. A temporary filling is used so that the dentist can simply check no infection develops in the tooth before placing a permanent filling a week or so later. If you need a crown, the dentist will take impressions of your mouth to send to the laboratory so the new crown can be fitted at the same time as your permanent filling.
The price of a root canal in Colombia is around a quarter of what you’d pay at home, as the table below demonstrates:
