Laser Teeth Whitening

Laser teeth whitening takes around 2 hours and is most people’s preferred method of teeth whitening as the results are immediate.

Using a gel applied to the teeth, a laser beam activates the bleaching agent in the gel which lightens the teeth. The gel is applied three times over 20 minute intervals, with the laser activation taking place at each interval. (This may vary slightly, depending on what system your dentist uses, but the total time of 2 hours is the same).

You will be given protective goggles to protect your eyes from the laser beam, and your dentist will cover the soft tissues in your mouth to ensure the gel only comes into contact with your teeth. At the end of the procedure your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned to remove all traces of the gel.

Home whitening kits produce a gradual lightening effect over a period of weeks. You will need to see your dentist to have impressions of your teeth made so that custom-made trays that fit over them can be made. The lab work to make the trays takes a few days, so you need to allow a week between seeing your dentist and picking the trays up.

When you pick the trays up your dentist will also provide you with the gel and show you how to use the gel in combination with the trays.

Many people who have had laser teeth whitening prefer to keep their white smile topped-up by using the professional home whitening kits afterwards. The advantage is that once the trays have been made you can use them over and over again and you will just need to get more gel, which you can get from your dentist at home.
