The conventional dental implants procedure usually necessitate two trips over a 12 month period, with some people who do not have viable bones in their jaws requiring three trips to include a sinus lift or bone graft procedure.
If bone graft/sinus lift and extractions will be done on the first trip and you will usually need to wait two to six months for the gums and bone to heal before the next stage of the implant procedure can be carried out.
The first stage of the implant procedure involves the gum being split open and a small hole drilled into the jaw bone into which the implant is inserted. The gum is stitched back over and the area left to heal. During this time your bone will fuse with the implant in a process called osseointegration, which provides a secure and stable root for the false tooth (crown) to be fitted. Your dentist will check that everything is as it should be before you return home.
On your next visit, the replacement tooth (crown) can be fitted. You implantologist will reopen the gum, inserting a connecting post (called an abutment) into the implant which the false tooth can be fitted to. It’s a relatively quick and painless procedure – you will be given local anesthetic – and you shouldn’t feel any more discomfort than you would for a filling. Again, your dentist will need to check on your implant over the next week or so before you can go home.
