What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots which have a false tooth (crown) attached and are surgically attached to your jawbone They look and feel just like your own teeth, and eventually, over time, the implant will fuse with your bone, creating a stable base for either a non-removable crown to be attached, or even a set of removable dentures if you have several implants inserted).

Implants don’t require any additional special care. Regular brushing, flossing and check-ups with your dentist will be enough to maintain them. You do have to look after them properly. They can still be damaged by gum disease and, of course, by trauma.

What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

For replacing missing teeth there is nothing better. They are secure, unobtrusive and to all intents and purposes feel, look and act in exactly the same way as your own teeth – but without the sensitivity to hot or cold!

For anyone who has been used to dentures, dental implants will feel a lot better. Dentures are not the ideal replacement for missing teeth – they are not permanently fixed and can slip, become ill-fitting – or get lost. With dental implants you will be able to smile, talk and eat with complete confidence, knowing your teeth are not going to slip. You won’t need to take them out at night and put them in a glass to soak, and you will have no further need of messy adhesives.

Dental implants may be the perfect, long-term solution for replacing missing teeth, but a lot of people cannot afford to have the procedure done because it is so expensive. Our Phuket Town dentists can supply dental implants for substantially less – all in the beautiful surroundings of a tropical beach.

What is involved in the procedure for dental implants?

A thorough assessment of the health of your teeth and gums will need to be done before the procedure is commenced. Digital x-rays or CT scans may need to be taken to assess your jawbone for underlying bone loss. If you have bone loss it doesn’t exclude you from dental implants, it just means that you will have to have a successful bone graft procedure before the commencement of the implant procedure. This is a common and successful dental procedure but it will mean you will have to factor in the cost of another visit and another procedure. It usually takes at least 6 months after the bone graft before the dental implant can be placed.

The placing of the implant is reasonably straightforward. A cut is made in the gum and a small opening drilled in the jaw bone. The implant is placed in the socket and the gum stitched back over. You will not be able to see any visible sign of the implant and given a healing denture to wear. Over the next 3 -6 months the bone and the implant will fuse (osseointegration) and the implant will form a solid base on which to attach the crown.

When you go back to your dentist after the osseointegration period, your dentist will attach the crown by opening the gum again, exposing the implant and fixing the crown. Once the crown is attached you will not see the implant – just a tooth that looks exactly like one or your own.

Is the procedure painful?

A local anesthetic is used to place the implant so it is not painful, although some people may prefer sedation, especially if they are having a bone graft. You may have a little swelling and experience some discomfort, equivalent to a tooth extraction, after the procedure. Most people are able to resume normal activities immediately after the placement of the implant.

How long does the procedure take in Phuket Town?

You will need to arrange two separate trips. The first must be for at least five days, and the second for seven. If you need a bone graft you will need to attend for three trips in total.
