The procedure for dental implants is a two-stage procedure (and in some cases three), which is important to bear in mind if you are considering going to Antalya (or anywhere else, for that matter) for your treatment.

The first thing to consider is whether you are a suitable candidate for a dental implant. If you haven’t lost your tooth through trauma or accident, then it may well be that you have periodontal disease, which is an advanced form of gum disease where the bone surrounding the tooth is lost, which means the tooth root has nothing to hold it in place, resulting in tooth loss. If your tooth is missing because of periodontal disease then you may need to have a bone graft to restore your missing bone prior to the implant procedure. If this is the case, you will then need three trips to complete the dental implant procedure.

However, ordinarily, the procedure will take two trips to complete. The first is to insert the implant. It’s a fairly straight-forward procedure where the dentist makes a small flap in your gum so they can access the jaw bone. A hole is made in the jaw and the implant inserted. The gum flap is stitched back in place and the implant is left to fuse with the jaw bone in a process called osseointegration for at least 3 months, but it could be up to a year. The implant is completely below the gum line so you won’t see it.

When you go back for the second part of the procedure, this is when the false tooth (crown) is attached. The dentist opens up the gum to expose the implant and attaches an abutment, which joins the crown to the implant. This protrudes beyond the gum, and the crown is placed on top, covering the abutment and looking like one of your own teeth.

Both trips will require you say in Antalya for between 7 to 10 days so your dentist can make sure everything is as it should be before you return home.
