Am I a Suitable Candidate?

Being in good general health is important, but there are some factors that may preclude you from this treatment.

• Bone Loss

Bone loss is usually a result of extensive gum disease, known as periodontitis. For the traditional dental implants procedure where one tooth is being replaced, if you have lost the tooth because of bone loss, you will likely not be suitable for the dental implant procedure. This is because the bone is lost and the implant, which is attached to the bone, has nothing to attach to.

However, bone loss may not necessarily prevent you from undergoing this particular dental treatment as other parts of the jaw may be healthy enough to hold an implant. 

• Smoking

Being a smoker may be a problem if you want to have any type of dental implant. This is because smoking reduces blood flow in the mouth, decreasing oxygen and nutrients. Immediately after implant surgery, this is an issue when the tissues need all the nutrients they can get to help the healing process and fight infection.

It is also problematic in the long term and can compromise the health of the tissue surrounding the implants, which can lead to the failure of the implant. Many dentists will not carry out dental implant procedures on smokers. So, if you want dental implants, you will need give up smoking for a time.

• Oral Health

Again, it is important that the state of your oral health, at the time of surgery, is in good overall shape. A dentist can clear most problematic issues, such as infections, prior to the implants going in.

Although the actual surgical procedure is carried out in one day, a great deal of planning goes into the treatment, which means you will require several appointments with your dentist before and after your treatment to ensure your procedure is a success.

You will need to factor in a number of days across two trips to complete your treatment, although your dentist in Cairo will give you further advice regarding this.

Thus, the full treatment takes shape as follows:

Initial Consultation & Assessment

You can send over digital x-rays via Dental Departures’ Customer Care Team to your dentist in Cairo to make an initial assessment as to your suitability for the procedure. If suitable, when you arrive in Cairo, your dentist will do a thorough examination of your mouth and take appropriate diagnostic tests, including 3D/CT scans which show the dentist the structures in your mouth, and allow them to plan exactly where your implants should be placed. 

Your implantologist will also need to take impressions of your mouth to send to the laboratory where your new teeth are tailor-made. The dentist will arrange an appointment for your procedure to be carried out when your teeth will also be ready to be placed.

Surgery for the All-on-4® treatment concept normally takes 2.5 hours for each arch (so your overall treatment time will be up to five hours). You can leave on the same day with a temporary, lighter set of replacement teeth (fixed bridge).

Once properly healed, which normally takes between six to eight months, the permanent teeth are attached upon your return visit to Egypt. Your dentist will advise you as to whether you require any additional treatment during your stay in Cairo.

Treatment Day 

The procedure is generally carried out under local anaesthetic with conscious sedation. After removing any remaining teeth, the dentist, using the CT scans as a guide, will pinpoint the four places in the jaw that will be the most effective areas to insert the implants. At these points, a small opening is made in the gum to expose the jaw. The implants are inserted—two at the back of the mouth and two in the front.

Using adjoining abutments and coping cylinders, the provisional arch of teeth (immediate loading denture) is then affixed, completing the procedure.

• Healing Phase

After teeth extraction(s), your mouth will need time to heal. So, a lighter set of temporary teeth is attached with a view to a permanent restoration being attached after around four to six months.

During this time, you will be advised to avoid hard foods so as to allow the implants to properly fuse with the jawbone.

• Final Restoration

After around six months, you'll return to Egypt to have your permanent fixed bridge installed. 

This may involve a couple of appointments, as final impressions of your mouth will need to be taken. However, the process of replacing the temporary bridge with the permanent one does not require surgery, as it can be screwed on and off without any incisions.
