What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are a type of dental restoration which form a cap over the tooth. They are one of the most popular dental procedures as they can be used functionally to strengthen teeth, and esthetically to disguise damaged or ugly teeth.

The benefits of dental crowns

1: Restorative – They are used to restore the full function of a damaged or missing tooth – so your speech won’t be impeded, and you can chew your food properly.

2: Protection – On damaged and decayed teeth they provide a shield, protecting a tooth from further decay and acting as a splint to strengthen a weak tooth.

3: Cosmetic – Improve the look of discolored, mis-shapen, cracked, chipped or broken teeth; and attached to a bridge replace a missing tooth to really perk up your smile.

4: Comfort – Unlike dentures they don’t slip.

5: Durable – Crowns can last for up to 15 years if you take care of them and don’t place extra stresses upon them, such as grinding your teeth.

Why have dental crowns in Guadalajara?

Guadalajara is Mexico’s second city. It has a compact, historic city center which is lovely to walk around, but it is also a 21st century city as far as amenities and technology are concerned. A lot of international electronics companies are based in and around the city and inside your dentist’s office you will also find the very latest diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.

The facilities in the clinics are just as good as you would expect in any major modern city – clean, hygienic and state-of-the-art. Likewise, your Guadalajara dentist is equipped with the necessary skills and expertise to deliver good standards of care. Our dentists are all quality-checked and offer guarantees on the work they do, as well as any materials used.

The dental materials used for prosthodontics, such as dental crowns, are not cheaper versions of what you would get at home. In fact, the exact same brands are available and used here, so you needn’t worry that your dental crowns will somehow be inferior.

How long do dental crowns take in Guadalajara?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped ‘ replacement caps’ that fit over a tooth, for example, to restore its appearance if damaged, or to provide strength or to cover a dental implant.

Crowns are either 'temporary' or 'permanent'; temporaries are made at your dentist’s office and fitted only until your permanent crowns are ready while permanent ones are made at a laboratory. If your dentist has an in-house lab using modern CAD/CAM techniques, crowns can usually be created and place in your mouth within a day or two.

The first visit to the dentist is the checking and preparation stage. Your dentist may take x-rays to check that the surrounding bone and roots of the tooth are healthy enough to receive the crown–if not, further treatment may be required. Next, the tooth and surrounding area will be numbed and the tooth filed down to make room for the crown. If a large area of tooth is missing (due to damage or decay), the tooth may need to be built up with filling material to support the crown. When your dentist is happy with the shape, impressions are made and sent to the lab for the crown to be custom-made.

This is where the temporary crown comes in handy: it's placed in order to protect your tooth until the permanent crown is ready a few days later.

On your second appointment, the dentist will remove the temporary crown for it to be replaced with the permanent one. After some final adjustments, the permanent crown will be cemented in place.

Your dentist will discuss with you beforehand what material is most suitable for you. Crowns are available in a variety of different materials, including zirconia, ceramic, porcelain and porcelain fused to metal.
