Vietnam is one of Southeast Asia’s popular spots for a holiday, particularly for Aussies and Kiwis. Look back at its history, and you can see influences of Chinese, French and American occupation in Vietnam’s buildings, culture and cuisine. It makes for a varied culture, and, in common with many of Southeast Asia’s countries, it has equally diverse landscapes – from the frantic pace of its cities to the peace and tranquillity of its countryside – all fringed with picture-postcard coastlines and some of the most remarkable natural landscapes in the world.
Dental implants are perhaps the best way of replacing missing teeth. They look, feel and act exactly like real teeth, but only you will know they aren’t. They are not a quick-fix solution – although there are ‘teeth in a day’ implants, most people usually need to make a couple of trips abroad for each of stage the procedure, and this is something you should consider if you are thinking about having dental implants in Vietnam.
As far as the standards of dental care in the country, providing you choose a reliable dentist – and one who is a specialist in dental implants – you really shouldn’t notice any difference in the expertise and professionalism of your dental specialist in Vietnam from any at home. Many specialists are likely to be members of recognized professional bodies, such as the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.
We vet all of our dentists in Vietnam to make sure they offer the skills and services we would expect from a dentist at home. This includes legal and criminal checks, as well as dentist qualifications. We also do clinic visits and collect testimonials from their patients. Only when we are happy with our checks is a dental clinic listed on our website – so you can be assured when you choose a dentist with us they do come up to standard.
Dental tourism is Vietnam is a growing industry, but many dentists who treat foreign patients recognise that they need to show they are as trustworthy as their patients’ dentists back home. Many are keen to demonstrate this by becoming members of internationally-recognised professional organizations, such as the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, or Western ones, such as the American Dental Association.
There is no reason why you shouldn’t consider getting your dental implants in Vietnam – and you’ll have a tremendous holiday too.
For most people, two trips will be needed if they are having dental implants in Vietnam. However, some people who have advanced periodontal disease (gum disease), may need a third trip to complete the procedure. The dental implant is placed inside the jaw bone, and if the bone has been damaged by gum disease then a bone graft procedure will need to be done to rebuild the jaw to hold the implant. Don’t worry – it sounds worse than it is – and is fairly common.
The dental implant itself is made up of three parts – the implant (which is fitted into the jaw bone), the abutment (which is fitted into the implant and provides the mechanism for the false tooth to be fixed), and the false tooth (crown).
The implant is fitted in one visit. An incision is made along the gum and a small hole drilled into the jawbone. The implant is fitted and the gum stitched over. This is then left to heal for at least 3 months, but it could be as long as 12. During this this, the implant fuses with the bone in a process called osseointegration, which provides a strong root for your false tooth to be attached.
Your next trip will entail the abutment and crown being placed. This is a simple matter of opening up the gum, and placing the abutment and crown.
At each visit you will be required to be around for between 7 and 10 days so that your dentist can check everything is healing and there is no sign of infection.
Dental implants are usually made of titanium, and the average cost of a titanium dental implant with abutment and standard crown in Australia is around AUD $5,000. In Vietnam, the average price is only $1,300 – for exactly the same graded and branded materials.
