The Ultimate Guide to Fillings in Zagreb

The Ultimate Guide to Fillings in Zagreb

Last fact-checked: 4 Apri 2020

If you’re struggling to find an NHS dentist at home, it’s possible to combine your everyday care with a holiday by booking in for a dental filling in Zagreb. Maintaining dental health is so important; if you can make big savings abroad, why not go for it?

Why Are Dental Fillings So Important for Dental Health?

One of the cornerstones of modern dentistry is preventive care—that is to say, regular treatments to prevent the onset of disease. Preventive care can encompass

? Dental check-ups, with current guidelines stating you need at least two per year

? Professional teeth cleaning to combat gum disease

? Dental fillings to prevent tooth cavities which can lead to bigger problems requiring more extensive dental work, such as root canal therapy.

Do I Need a Tooth Filling?

A tooth filling is required when your tooth has decayed. Decay is caused by acid-producing bacteria that stick to the teeth, particularly if you are a lover of sticky, sugary and starchy food and drinks, which provides the perfect environment for them to thrive. The acid these bacteria produce erodes tooth enamel, causing decay.

You know that feeling of “squeaky-clean” teeth? That’s what you should be aiming for as clean teeth make it difficult for bacteria to take hold.

While keeping up with good oral hygiene at home will help maintain dental health to a certain degree, you still need to see your dentist regularly. A quick visit can remove any decay before it becomes a more serious problem, like a root canal, which will need treating as the alternative is to have the tooth extracted.

What Is the Procedure for a Filling? How Long Will it Take?

Most dental fillings take a matter of minutes to carry out; however, if yours is a larger one then the dentist may have to remodel the tooth, which might take a little longer.

Before the treatment commences, your dentist will need to examine your mouth and take x-rays. If a filling is needed, your dentist will discuss the options for the filling material. Most people prefer composite or porcelain fillings as they are tooth-coloured and give the best cosmetic results. Other materials, like gold, are also available, as are the silver-coloured amalgam fillings. These options are being used less these days, possibly because of the mercury controversy, but also because of their not-so-subtle appearance.

After you’ve decided on the material, the dentist will get to work. The area around the tooth in question will be numbed with a local anaesthetic. Your dentist will give this a minute or two to work, and then begin to remove the decayed area(s) on the tooth using a specialist hand tool. Once all the decay is removed, the resulting cavity is cleaned and the filling material applied. It is left to set for a moment or two, and then the dentist will shape, smooth and polish the tooth to complete the procedure.

How Can I Find a Trustworthy Dentist in Zagreb?

Dental facilities in Zagreb are generally of a good standard. The city (and the rest of Croatia) is known to have modern clinics, up-to-date technologies and dentists who are highly-skilled and well-qualified. However, it is always prudent to carry out some of your own research to find a dental clinic that is reliable.

This is where Dental Departures can help. We’ve already carried out the groundwork and pre-screened all dental providers listed on our site.

Our background checks include looking over legal/criminal records and carrying out onsite visits. We also confirm dentist qualifications and professional memberships, as well as collate patient reviews. These are published on our site, alongside prices, location maps and clinic photos so you can easily home in on salient information to help you make your own choice.
